Project Title AI Opportunity Landscape and Implementation Strategy for Modern Industrial Distribution
Project Topics Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Data Management Information Technology (IT) Operations Research, Analysis, Evaluation Software Design & Development Strategic Planning Technology Commercialization
Skills & Expertise
Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
Riverhawk Industrial Supply, a growing distributor serving power generation, construction, and industrial maintenance clients, is known for its high-touch service and technical expertise. As the industrial supply sector undergoes rapid digital transformation, Riverhawk is eager to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to remain competitive and scale efficiently.

Despite growing interest in emerging technologies, Riverhawk currently lacks a structured framework to evaluate, prioritize, and implement AI initiatives. Leadership is aware that AI has the potential to drive improvements across key strategic goals—such as expanding gross margins, increasing revenue, reducing operating costs, enhancing the customer experience, optimizing working capital, and strengthening talent development. However, with a wide range of possible applications—ranging from sales automation and inventory forecasting to intelligent customer service and pricing optimization—it is difficult to determine where to start.

This project aims to bridge that gap by helping Riverhawk identify, assess, and prioritize high-impact AI opportunities that are technically feasible, operationally compatible, and financially justifiable. The student team will explore the broader AI landscape in industrial distribution, evaluate opportunities using a custom balanced scorecard, and work closely with Riverhawk leadership to select and plan for the implementation of a top-priority initiative. This work will not only guide Riverhawk's near-term technology strategy but also provide a reusable decision-making framework for future innovation efforts.
Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  1. Conduct discovery interviews with Riverhawk leadership and staff to gather existing ideas and strategic priorities.
  2. Research AI use cases across the industrial distribution sector, focusing on tools aligned with Riverhawk’s operations and goals.
  3. Develop a balanced scorecard framework to assess AI opportunities based on complexity, ROI, technical readiness, and stakeholder impact.
  4. Prioritize and evaluate 2–3 top AI initiatives through detailed feasibility studies and business case development.
  5. Select one initiative for in-depth implementation planning, including vendor options, system integration, and change management.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
  • AI opportunity scorecard includes clear, weighted criteria tailored to Riverhawk’s strategy (complete by Week 4).
  • Minimum of 10 potential AI use cases identified and mapped across core business functions (by Week 5).
  • Top 3 initiatives evaluated using feasibility, ROI, and alignment metrics, with stakeholder validation (by Week 8).
  • At least one AI initiative selected with an actionable implementation roadmap including timeline, tools, and resource plan (by project end).
  • Final deliverables include a reusable evaluation toolkit and executive presentation to Riverhawk leadership.
